#8 Life Lesson: Welcome to the “Fifty and Fabulous Club”, I was often told. The problem was that I didn’t feel fabulous and I felt way older than 50!!. I was sick and tired of feeling “sick and tired”. My body was rebelling with symptoms that screamed that I was in trouble. I spoke to many doctors who were quick to offer their diagnoses, but no relief.

After visiting multiple doctors and specialists, I finally found a doctor who actually listened and didn’t have a problem telling it to me straight. “It’s not a matter of IF you will have a heart attack or stroke; it’s a matter of WHEN”. My father had just suffered a serious heart attack and the doctor’s honest words hit me like a ton of bricks and scared the daylights out of me! I wanted to see my daughters grow up, get married and have children! I wanted to live the life God intended! Nothing was worth cutting my life short!  So, I gave up my comfort foods and replaced them with healthier choices. I also joined a few fitness accountability groups for emotional support.

The past 2 years haven’t been easy at all, but it’s been worth every bit of sacrifice! Not only did I lose over 45 pounds, with the support of my team of doctors, coaches, friends and family, I gained a quality of life that I hadn’t experienced in a very long time and my health improved drastically.

If I could speak to my younger self, I would say: “Please listen to your body. If something doesn’t feel right, then it probably isn’t. Don’t give up. And don’t be afraid to find the answers. Keep searching until you find a doctor who will actually listen to you and then LISTEN to the Doctor, stubborn woman!. Oh yeah, and one last thing: Step AWAY from the donuts!”

I am you. I was reading these testimonials a year ago. I thought no way do I have the will power to lose weight yet alone over 50 pounds. I was eating at least 2 chocolate bars a day and would stop at McDonald’s daily for an ice cream cone.

I started my low carb lifestyle on October 28, 2015. I was 227 pounds. I was happy and fine with being overweight. I loved food and would plan my day around my meals. My friend, Kim Jenkins, had great success at Winchester Weight Loss, and every time I saw her she would ask me if I wanted the phone number. Luckily, after several months I finally called and made an appointment.

Fast forward to August 16, 2016. I am now 173 pounds. I have more energy and confidence. I am happier and healthier. I was a size 20 and today I am a size 14. It is so exciting to be able to shop anywhere and not be limited to the plus size section.

Low carb works for me because I can eat meals like cheesesteak with peppers, onions and cheese (all I do is skip the bread). This is a lifestyle where you eat when you are hungry. Also, it works on the go. There are many low carb options at fast food restaurants that make it easy to fit low carb into your daily life.

Everyday is not easy. I would love to eat ice cream and chocolate daily but have gained the tools to win the battle over them. I am making the choice everyday to live a longer healthier life. Some days I over indulge on Atkins bars and peanuts- and that is okay. Because I am winning the battle I have lost over 50 pounds so far.

You can do this. I was where you are now. Pick up the phone and make an appointment. The women at the office have been my biggest cheerleaders. The Facebook support group is the best place to get tips, recipes, and encouragement. You got this and you can win your battle too!

I have struggled my whole life with my weight. I honestly can not remember not having an issue with my body weight. It stopped me from doing so many things growing up – being on the swim team, volleyball team etc… I was just too self-conscious and extremely shy. When I was a senior in high school I did get on the Weight Watchers program and it did work for awhile but I did not stick with it and gained it all back plus more. I kept gaining weight as the years passed and after I had my 1st daughter I started taking the appetite suppressant and was advised to eat better and exercise but I didn’t, I relied on the medication and the weight did come off right away with no effort. I was ecstatic. When I got pregnant with our second daughter I let myself go and gained around 70 lbs while pregnant. I was miserable for the next 3 years or so but put on a happy front to cover up my sadness. Until one day my friend, Jessica Aretz told me about her sister’s weight loss clinic. She started the program and was losing weight and I would see her frequently and inside I couldn’t help but feel jealous. I could not take it anymore! I HAD to do something, I had to make a change ASAP! Finally, after Jessica’s encouragement, I made the appointment with Jacqueline Shoemaker at Winchester Weight Loss that forever changed my life! I started the program October 23, 2015. I weighed 215 lbs and had back pains and low energy. After just a few short months I lost 20 lbs then 40 lbs and finally made it to my 50 lb goal!! It was a lot to take-in at first, I had to re-learn how to grocery shop and cook and change my daily routines. I was overwhelmed in the beginning but with weekly visits with Jacqueline I learned the skills to live this new life style. I lost weight but I gained so much more- that I am worth it, that I can do it, that I am beautiful, that I can be comfortable in my body! Jacqueline helped me come out of my shell and took me out of my comfort zone on many occasions and helped me through it and for that I will FOREVER be grateful! I am now 146 lbs, only 6 lbs till my next goal weight. I am honestly the happiest I’ve ever been. My body is not perfect, it never will be and I’m ok with that. I realized that I am more than a number on the scales. I am a strong woman, mother, wife, daughter, friend and I need to accept myself and live life to the fullest and be a positive role model to my daughters.
